SXSW is over. Thank God. The alleys are swollen with trash and all the hipsters have returned to their places of origin. Last year I was all about the movies, this year it was music. David Cross hosted a free show on both Friday and Saturday at Red 7. Highlights included The Gossip, Deerhunter, Aziz Ansari, Michael Showalter, The Black Lips, Erase Errata, Brother Reade, and free Dewar’s. But this is all indy kiddie stuff.
The real highlight of the SbiSX was seeing Lee “Scratch” Perry live in an MTV type setting at the Convention Center. This 50-minute set was broadcast live on Direct TV and was totally free. But don’t worry about not having direct teevee: I shot the entire show myself and will be posting soon.
And don’t worry if you weren’t at Emo’s for the Daptone label show featuring the Budos Band and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, because I got that too. As a matter of fact, I’ve got more Southbi footage than I can shake a stick at … so I should go edit.
And since today is the 20th the whole world knows about the loss of its greatest theater. Yes, the rumors are true. The Alamo Downtown is closing its doors after 10 years at 4th and Colorado. Words cannot express how sad my soul is right now. After the 10th anniversary party, the Alamo will move to its new home amongst the douche-nozzles of 6th street at the Ritz.
