RIP Don LaFontaine and Jerry Reed.
RIP Don LaFontaine and Jerry Reed.

Today at the Alamo Ritz lobby bar SXSW film lovers were treated to some sunken funky treasures. From 11am-5pm little known Michigan wax melter DJ HAS, pictured above, owned the 1’s & 2’s. The cold and unquiet storm that threatened to turn the town into a sloppy jalopy was stopped dead in its tracks by the sweet soulful sounds of HAS and his part time collaborator LOOCH. HAS audio historian DR.T. layed out a six hour set of continuous, non-filler, soul buttering jams from such classic HAS collections as Crate Bangers and The Five Fingers Meet the Face. If you missed out on Monday’s scoop, look for a repeat performance thursday morning 11am-5pm. This once in a Red Moon set will contain hits from HAS & LOOCH funk sides A-D and the sought after 28 track Funky So & So collection. Come have a beer and listen to DR.T. turn that HAS shit up to 11!

Any Hippie can play that mess.
Please note that Unknown channels Hendrix for 9 minutes, so be patient on the download.

If you missed the show at the Continental Club last night, watch this. Then get your shit together and come on down tonight for an encore performance by the Lonesome Spurs and Unknown Hinson.
Grindhouse was pretty good. Look. It does feel a bit like the RadioActiveMan episode of the Simpsons, but it did make me laugh. Don’t! Don’t! Don’t! Thanksgiving.
March has been full of goodness. SXSW favorites The Budos Band can be seen here. As Well as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. Please forgive the titles, this is a rough draft. Hope you like it.
Since 301 didn’t turn over enough ducats in profit during the last quarter of ‘06, we’re doing all our Sundance reporting from Austin Texas. Yee-Ha! If you thought we were all pretty sad we couldn’t go last year and support the Fist Foot Way, we’re extra sad this year that we can’t see Snow Angels.
Snow Angels is the new film by Dave Green. I can’t say David Gordon Green’s name without mentioning both George Washington and All The Real Girls. I also can’t mention his name without thinking of Big sitting in a bathtub of ground chuck. He has also directed some cool Truth ads.
I know next to nothing about Snow Angels, but I’m really happy Dave has a new movie coming out. Can’t wait to see me some Tim Orr photography on the Alamo’s perfect silver screen. I can feel the colors pimp slapping me now. David Wingo on the soundtrack. Yeah! I hope it screens during SXSW.
And that’s the 301 Sundance report from Austin, Texas.

Back in the fall of 1990, after J-Ferg’s birthday dinner, I went to Record Town on Grand River in East Lansing and picked up a very special cassette tape. That tape was Group Sex by the Circle Jerks. It had a profound effect on me. As a matter of fact it is still in my car…and I still listen to it. So needless to say it was a big thrill to see them live at the Fun, Fun, Fun, Fest. Here is a medley of some of my favorites from Group Sex.
